Where did it all begin?

The history of Luukonniemi estate began over a century ago with its first settlers arriving on the property. The grand old building that stands proudly in the middle of the yard was constructed in 1896.

Initially, farming was on a small scale, with the primary sources of livelihood being hunting and fishing. However, over time, the focus shifted, and maintaining the estate became the main occupation, relegating hunting and fishing to mere hobbies. For over a hundred years, the estate had cattle in the barn, though it now mainly serves as storage.

Today, the current hostess, Kaisa, represents the third generation of her family to manage Luukonniemi estate. The present barn was built in 1984, but the barn’s shed has been preserved from the barn built by Kaisa’s parents in 1962.

The story of Luukonniemi estate is one of evolution and continuity, reflecting a rich heritage that has adapted through the years while maintaining its historical roots.

History of the accommodation

Napapiirin Järvilomat will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2027. However, accommodation at the estate predates the company’s official registration. The estate’s grandparents hosted summer guests continuously for 20 years before the business was formally established.

Between 1946 and 1959, a teacher couple resided in the family’s chamber. At that time, they lived in the old building and enjoyed a full-board arrangement. For thirteen years, meals were prepared and shared with the tenants, while the family and the couple lived separately otherwise.

The estate has also provided shelter to villagers from the opposite shores of the lake, who have been traveling to various destinations.

The log cabin by the shore was once a retreat for Kaisa’s family. Kaisa had the idea of allowing others to enjoy the beautiful lake views, leading to the creation of Kaarna Cabin. To realize this vision, the cabin was renovated for accommodation use in 1998.

The demand for the cabin increased, and Kaisa became so enthusiastic about hosting that, in 2000, the old building was also renovated. This renovation saved the historic building from deterioration and restored it to a livable condition. The building was named “Perinnetalo Pirtti.”

Expansion of operations

As the demand for accommodation grew, Kaisa’s enthusiasm for hosting led to further expansion of the estate’s operations. In 2000, the old building, which had been at risk of falling into disrepair, was renovated and repurposed for accommodation. This renovation not only preserved the historical character of the building but also provided additional space for guests. The newly restored building was named “Perinnetalo Pirtti.”

A new generation

In the autumn of 2025, a significant generational transition took place at Luukonniemi estate. Ownership of the estate and its accommodation business passed to Kaisa’s eldest child, together with three of her grandchildren. This new generation brings fresh energy, ideas, and perspectives, while honoring the rich heritage and traditions that have defined Luukonniemi for over a century. The generational transition was supported solely by EU and LEADER funding, enabling a smooth transfer of ownership and the preservation of Luukonniemi’s long-standing traditions.

Even before officially taking over, the new generation had already begun developing the estate’s future by constructing four new cottages. These additions respond directly to increasing demand, expand the estate’s appeal to a broader audience, and create new opportunities for diverse guest experiences. The new cottages blend modern comfort with the estate’s characteristic charm, offering visitors more ways to enjoy the unique lakefront setting. The construction of the four new cottages was supported solely by EU and LEADER funding, enabling the estate to meet growing demand, expand its target audience, and enhance the guest experience.

The family’s vision is to continue developing the estate as a welcoming retreat for guests, maintaining its unique charm and connection to nature, while introducing innovations that reflect the needs and desires of modern travelers. With the legacy of three generations behind them, the new owners are committed to preserving the estate’s character, ensuring that the story of Luukonniemi continues for many generations to come.

We are proud to be a family business that has recently completed a generational transition. This important step in our company’s history was supported financially by the EU and the LEADER program, which help local businesses grow and thrive. With this support, we have been able to continue our family legacy while investing in the future of our company.
